Spectacles distribution by Hambantota Rotarian's

After some weeks of the eye check of the local people from Hambantota and surroundings we were happy to inform them that we could distribute the free spectacles on Sunday December 8th.

Like last time, the distribution was organized in the Anglican Church of Hambantota.  We decided to put tables and chairs outside in the garden and to work in the shadow of a nice tree.

President Rtn. Vibhu Wickramasinghe from Rotary Club Colombo Fort, together with two opticians joined our members to distribute the spectacles.

At 9 am. people were already waiting with impatience to collect their new spectacles.  After registration and checking all details we could start to distribute the frames.

The opticians took a look at the frames, the fitting and the optical result.
With a smile on their face and grateful towards the members of Rotary Club the persons got home.

A few persons didn’t showed up.  They will be contacted and have the possibility to collect their spectacles in the near future.

With few words, happiness and sign language the persons gave us the impression that we did a great job for them. (Article reported by Rtn. Harold)

Eye Clinic in Hambantota for low Income Families  By Rotarian's
Mission for Vision in Sri lanka – Eye Clinics

A project enabled by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Funded and initiated by the Rotary Club of Jefferson India ( Madras ), the Rotary Club of Bend High Desert in District 5110 in U.S.A and
the Rotary Club of Kandy Sri Lanka.

The Rotary Club of Hambantota had the pleasure to organise together with the Rotary Club Colombo Fort  on Saturday the 19 th of October, an Eye Camp in the Anglican Church of Hambantota.
We were pleased to welcome  the President  Rtn. Vibhu Wickramasinghe with some members of the Rotary Club Colombo Fort,  former President  Rtn. N. Bandaranayake of the Rotary Club of Kandy,  a doctor in optometry  of the Kandy Hospital and 3 opticians/optometrists.

From the moment  we opened the doors, people from Hambantota and surrounding villages came in.   While the doctor and opticians installed the  equipment, we could start with the registration.
There was a lot of interest by the locals and after a while there were already around 60 people waiting.
At 10.00 am we started the Eye Camp with a pray of a local sister and speaches of
Rtn. Bandaranayake, Rtn. Samidon and an explanation of an optician.

Each person underwent 3 different  test.  The persons  in whom cataract was found, were put asside to discus the possibility of an operation.  In the near future those people will have an free operation at the Eye Clinic in Kandy.  They can take one person with them and even transport will be for free.

Around noon  most of people were already checked.  We were thinking already about lunch but suddenly more interested people were coming.
2 pm was the moment we closed the doors and were happy to see that we had  an attendance of 222 persons in total.
For 207 persons  the opticians made a prescription and within 3 weeks the free glasses fixed with lenses will be ready for them.
In the near future the 15 persons ,in whom cataract was found,  will be contacted to organize the operation in Kandy.
We are looking back to a successful Eye Camp.  The locals were very grateful of this event.
We, members of the Rotary Club Hambantota , want to thank  our friends of  Rotary Club Colombo and  Kandy, the doctors and opticians.
A great job for the low income people of Down South. Article reported  by Rtn. Harold

Rotarian's visited preschool training programme at lunama school on 08th October 2014
The Rotary club of Hambantota visited the Lunama School in the Hambantota district on the 8th September to view the preschool teachers training programme supported by the above club.
The president, Rtn. Raelene  and members visited the school to see the ongoing activity. On the day the teachers were divided into small groups involved with craft activity. This was an exercise to give small children a creative outlet and the teacher free flexible time to observe their group input. it also strengthens fine motor skills in small children.  The finished product was then discussed with the teacher and she would ask the children to explain in detail.
A small speech was give by the president about the value of early education and the inspiration these teachers give young children.
We further discussed the course with the teachers and were pleased at the success of its progress.
